It is stated in the notes that it takes as its object that which has been apprehended by the javana.

As we are in the realm of epistemology here, does this rule out invalid/errant perception?

I assume since we are talking about dhammas and not namapannatti, there is no issue with not perceiving things as they really are (living being vs. 5 Aggregates) or mis-perceiving (like taking a coiled rope for a snake).
