I know that to qualify for the 8 courses + thesis path, one needs a 3.5 GPA. Can you verify that this is the scale you are using to calculate, as I see only letter grades and not a GPA in my educational records?

We are using the standard method of GPA calculation. The grade points for every course are summed up and then divided into a number of courses taken.
The grade points are as follows: A+ EXCELLENT 4.00
A ALMOST EXCELLENT 3.75
A- FAIRLY EXCELLENT 3.50
B+ VERY GOOD 3.25 75-79 B GOOD 3.00
B- FAIRLY GOOD 2.75
C+ FAIR 2.50
C SATISFACTORY 2.25
C- MINIMUM SATISFACTORY 2.00
